Humanistic computing
Fingertip interaction was a detour in humanity's path. Shattering the screen and returning to the physical world — that's what the interface of the future looks like.
The world is the operating system; everything is the interface.
We're no longer confined within a rectangle of glass — the physical world itself becomes a vast operating system. The old way of perceiving and understanding the virtual world — through vision and symbols alone — gives way to a far more multi-sensory kind of interaction. We no longer learn only by reading information; we also learn through hearing, touch, and our sense of time and space. Knowledge work that was once confined to our fingertips expands to engage the whole body's nerves and senses.
Every object — an apple, a slice of toast, a sweater — becomes a fusion of physical matter and virtual-world program. When you hold an apple, it is simultaneously 250 grams of mass, one-tenth of the filling for an apple pie, and part of the sugar and energy you need to consume today. Matter is also program: every square centimeter of your field of view can present a higher density of useful information. The virtual world is no longer locked inside hardware — it becomes a world parasitic on, and bound to, reality.
We no longer need any UI to carry information — the world itself is the information, and everything is computable. Boundaries are dissolving; reality becomes an infinite canvas for every builder. The world is the database; your life is the entire context.
Tangible manipulation programming and malleable software
Programs within reach, and software that bends to your hand.
Creation becomes simple, direct, and natural. No more typing out symbols on a flat screen that were never meant to be read by humans in the first place — instead, real, tangible action does the work. Programs can be written by typing, but also by natural language, by tabulating, by gesture, by speaking aloud, by acting, painting, or choreographing. Actions you can physically sense in the real world can directly affect code. How a tool is built becomes plain to see at a glance.
Software becomes like malleable clay — everyone has the ability to shape their own application through the simplest, most direct actions. Programs can be seen, understood, and modified quickly, no longer a black box that shuts beginners out. Creation is no longer a programmer's privilege. The boundary of software authorship blurs — everyone's piece of creation stitches together into a fuller ecosystem, producing something more powerful and more astonishing than any single component could achieve alone.
We no longer need to deliberately, manually enter data or information — our everyday behavior itself becomes the storage and computation of data. We step out of the screen and back into real life, enriching our souls through learning, creating, and moving.
Dynamic media and the visualization of thought
All information is carried by dynamic media, and the absorption and learning of content become deeply personal. Each individual's background, interests, and perspective shapes the tone, framework, and angle in which information should be presented to them. Even the same person, at different times or in different states — focused versus relaxed, say — needs a different granularity of information. Your textbook can become a film, or a podcast; the dry symbols of linear algebra can become an animation or a model, letting you watch a formula evolve, trace the lineage and dedication of the mathematicians behind it, or see its role in driving forward AI and machine learning.
The thinking behind a conversation becomes visualized. Talks and lectures no longer revolve around the same fixed slide deck, repeating the same explanation over and over. The speaker holds, in her hands, the model that lives in her head, and can reshape it in real time based on what she's saying and what the audience asks. The space of teaching itself becomes part of the knowledge — information is delivered and received within a space you can physically sense, not flattened onto a textbook page or a screen. Data appears the instant you look at a physical object, no longer rendered as tables and formulas humans struggle to read, but as a rich visual system. Everyone can fully and directly understand the systems and the world we build — understand it, build it, enrich it.
The agency to create, rather than passive consumption.
We're no longer passively dependent on developers who can read programming languages, waiting for them to build applications that, by virtue of being general-purpose, are inevitably watered down. We create actively, instead of merely consuming. Because creation becomes so easy and so intuitive, the barrier to building tools for yourself becomes nearly imperceptible.
The communal computer
The world-OS becomes a space co-created by everyone. Each person's work can fully weave into the larger ecosystem — shaping other parts of it, and being shaped in turn by every new piece that joins. Art, literature, music, and code all elevate one another within this space, coexisting, interdependent.
Writing this, I feel again that thrill and joy of being struck by a traveler from the future. I want to be part of building this system — alongside the many believers in this vision — defining the principles of interaction for this utopian reality. These ideas may look impossibly distant, but with enough decomposition and staged construction, they can become real.
Even as the commercially and logically minded left side of my brain keeps mocking the fragility of this vision, every question here is one worth thinking through and solving.
